For the ultimate-sounding 911, the GT3 is the one to go for, with its howling engine sound and loud exhaust note. The eight-speed PDK auto gearbox shifts extremely quickly and surprisingly smoothly. The optional seven-speed manual gearbox on the Carrera T, S and GTS is one of the best fitted to any sports car, while the six-speed version on the GT3 requires more effort but is rewarding all the same. You sit close to the floor, which gives the 911 a suitably hunkered-down feel from behind the steering wheel, and the pedals are perfectly positioned. The speedo and rev counter are directly in your line of sight and easy to read at a glance, but you might find some other instruments, including the fuel gauge, are obscured by the steering wheel. The air-con controls are rather fiddly, too. Visibility, parking sensors and cameras Driving a sports car usually involves making serious visibility sacrifices, but the 911 is surprisingly easy to see out of. Forward visibility is excellent, thanks to slim windscreen pillars.
Those distinctive bulges around the tops of the headlights give you a clear idea of where the front wheels are, too, making the 911 easier to manoeuvre than the Jaguar F-Type and the Mercedes-AMG GT. Plus, front and rear parking sensors come as standard, with a reversing camera fitted to the Turbo and Turbo S, and optional on lesser variants. The biggest object obstructing your view out will be the roll cage that comes fitted behind the front seats with the optional Club Sport Package on the GT3. Sat nav and infotainment Porsche has acquired a reputation for being stingy with the amount of kit it fits to its cars, but the 911 comes with all the infotainment essentials.

Granted, you can see those massive rear haunches in the door mirrors, which is a bit of a giveaway, but otherwise, you simply get a Turbo S motif on the rev counter. A couple of soft holdalls should go in there without too much trouble. More useful is the carpeted rear cargo space behind the back seats. For all its dynamic prowess, this special 911 is remarkably supple, with much the same ride quality as a Carrera. Yes, the Turbo S is a little unforgiving at low speeds, and the occasional bump will send a jolt through the stiff body structure, but considering the performance on offer, this is a remarkably smooth ride. If nothing else, the way this Porsche stacks up so well alongside supercars, grand tourers and other sports coupes is testament to its wide range of capabilities.
There is a caveat here, though. Admittedly, the 4S is slower in a straight line and in corners. The Carrera 4S is, however, considerably cheaper. For some or even most owners, two Porsches is better than one.
However, the latter version of hardware is already being used in the current line-up by the likes of the Cayenne and Panamera , so there may yet be accommodations for making that transition later on. Rumors are currently swirling that the hybrid components will add no more than 220 lbs—neither a large nor small number, in my opinion—with everything positioned in a way that maintains favorable weight-balance characteristics. With Porsche betting large on eFuels , the Porsche 911 serves as a last bastion of hope in prolonging the life of the internal combustion engine.
