He devised his own allegory on romantic growing pains, set squarely in a teenage context. About the time he was pulling his musical crossover coup, the opportunity for Marty to do a little film acting came up. The Badge of Marshal Brennan, not coincidentally a western, featured him in a supporting role, the first of several sidelines into acting over the coming years. Marty composed "She Was Only Seventeen," targeting teenage emotions once again before going down a new path, or I should say trail, that succeeded in spreading his music to the widest possible audience. Robbins and Don Law were careful not to overdo the "Old West" angle, riding into new territory when they felt the time was right. Marty and Don liked what they heard and released it as recorded while experimenting with ways to recreate the unusual effect. It eventually became the guitar technique known as "fuzz tone. Fascinated by NASCAR racing, Marty began hitting the track himself and raced professionally for the first time in 1966, continuing for many years.

His last race was in a Junior Johnson -built 1982 Buick Regal in the Atlanta Journal 500 on November 7, 1982, a month before his death. Robbins developed cardiovascular disease early in life. After his third heart attack on December 2, 1982, he underwent quadruple coronary bypass surgery.
He did not recover and died six days later, on December 8, at St.

Robbins recorded a few more pop-oriented songs until he had his biggest hit in 1959 with the sentimental western song El Paso. The piece stayed at the top of the country charts for six weeks and earned him a Grammy in 1961. Robbins had thus ended his pop phase and in the following years mainly published Western songs, often with a Tex-Mex touch. Occasionally he went on excursions into Hawaiian music or jazz. During these years he took on small roles in western films for the first time. In 1962 he started racing, which soon became his great passion. The sales of his records decreased slightly, although he was still regularly represented in the top 10 and had a few number 1 hits. He still performed at the Opry every week.

He began in the early 1960s by racing stock cars on small dirt tracks. During this time, Robbins kept making music. He suffered his third serious heart attack in early December. Despite undergoing surgery, Robbins died a few days later, on December 8, 1982, in a Nashville hospital. He was 57 years old. Robbins was survived by his wife, Marizona; the pair had been married since 1948 and had two children together. Marty Robbins enjoyed one of the most illustrious careers in the history of country music.
He recorded more than 500 songs and 60 albums, and won two Grammy Awards. Each year for 19 consecutive years, Robbins managed to place at least one song on the Billboard country singles charts. Most remarkably, according to Robbins himself, he accomplished all this without any special musical talent. I experiment once in a while to see what I can do. I find out the best I can do is stay with ballads.
With some performances under his belt in the late 1940s, he finally signed to Columbia Records in 1951. Although his first two singles tanked, "Love Me or Leave Me Alone" went to number one and started a string of varied singles that lasted until his death in 1982. Thanks to his success as a musician, he was able to field his own entry for nearly all of the races he participated. He did considerably well too: Robbins scored 6 top 10 finishes in 35 starts.
